Sean Winter Wins PokerGO Cup Event #1 for $216,000

Sean Winter entered the final table of 2023 PokerGO Cup Event #1: $10,000 NL Hold’em as the short stack with seven players remaining. Not only was Winter short, but he came into the final day of play with just seven big blinds in his stack. Winter spun up his stack, flipped his way into the chip lead, and never looked back. In the end, he topped Alex Foxen in heads-up play to win the first event of the 2023 PokerGO Cup series.

Winter walked away with a $216,000 first-place prize and assumed the top spot on the 2023 PokerGO Cup leaderboard, making him the frontrunner to become this year’s PokerGO Cup champion.

Anthony Hu was the first player to bust on the day, and he ran ace-queen into the pocket kings of Alex Foxen. After Hu’s seventh-place bust, Orpen Kisacikoglu was eliminated in sixth place. He ran pocket jacks into Sean Winter’s aces.

Five-handed play last for quite a bit of time and the stacks were swinging. It was during five-handed play that Foxen made an incredible hero call with ace high on a queen-six-five-two-two board against Adrian Mateos. Mateos had just nine high. Mateos was very short after that hand but spun his stack back up. Ultimately, Mateos’ comeback was cut short when he went out in fifth place.

David Peters began the day as the chip leader, but it just wasn’t his day. Nothing seemed to go right for Peters and it resulted in a fourth-place finish for $90,000.

Joseph Cheong finished in third place after fighting hard all day and consistently being one of the shorter stacks at the final table. His king-jack couldn’t beat the ace-four of diamonds for Winter and it was time for heads-up play.

Heads-up play saw Winter’s 7,900,000 lead Foxen’s 3,350,000 in chips. Winter clipped Foxen early, Foxen doubled back up, but then it ended shortly thereafter when Winter shoved on Foxen with trip kings and got called by worse.
