WSOP 2023 Day 17 Recap: Moncek on the Brink of Second Bracelet This Series, Ausmus Firing for Bounty Gold

There were six events that took place on Day 17 of the 2023 World Series of Poker (WSOP) in Las Vegas. The Horseshoe and Paris casinos were packed as stars such as Phil Hellmuth, Josh Arieh, Jeremy Ausmus and Daniel Negreanu all went deep. Michael Moncek played his way down to just three in the $10,000 Razz Championship and only eight players remain in the $10,000 Secret Bounty event too.

There are just eight players remaining in the hunt for the top prize of $733,317   in Event #35, the $10,000-entry Secret Bounty event. Top of those eight is Chris Klodnicki (6,615,000), who will attempt to win his second bracelet when play resumes on the final day, holding a slim lead over five-time WSOP bracelet winner Jeremy Ausmus (6,475,000).

 

Ausmus, who has already reached a final table this year, is a man in form and will be hard to stop but behind him sit yet more superstars of the game. Angel Guillen goes for bracelet #2 from fourth in chips with 4.15 million and Daniel Rezaei, one of the stars of the last couple of WSOP festivals, has over 3 million chips with which to attack.

 

On a day of dramatic bounty chasing, Ali Shahni won the $250,000, while stars such as Artur Martirosian ($100,000), Tyler Cornell ($100,000) and Phil Hellmuth ($50,000) all pulled big numbers. Hellmuth, also known as The Poker Brat, busted four in short order on his way to an impressive 11th-place finish for $45,301.

Mizrachi Minces Arieh, Shoots for Bracelet #5

 

Robert Mizrachi will play for his fifth bracelet tomorrow as the chip leader of 13 remaining players in Event #34, the $1,500-entry Pot Limit Omaha tournament. The American, who will begin with 5,680,000 chips, is ahead of Matthew Beinner (5,175,000). Between the two players, overnight chip leader Josh Arieh’s chances evaporated, significantly to a set of aces.

 

Arieh busted in 13^th place, cashing for $16,028 when for much of the day, it looked as if he might be playing for his sixth WSOP bracelet and second this series tomorrow.

 

That won’t be the case, but Mizrachi can’t hope to have it all his own way, especially with crushers such as Sean Troha (3,935,000) and Ryan Coon (1,025,000) still in contention, the last day of drama could be amazing.

Long Time Coming for Phil in Nine Game Mix

 

The 36^th event of the 2023 WSOP will see Philip Long attack the final day with the chip lead in an event he finished third in just last year. Long, who hails from the United Kingdom, will approach the final day with the idea of going two places better than last year’s corresponding event with 1,225,000 chips, a mite more than Jean Gaspard (1,100,000), with Justin Liberto, already a runner-up this series, third in chips with 999,000.

Wong Leads in Razz Championship

 

Just three players are still in the hunt for a WSOP bracelet in Event #33, the $10,00-entry Razz Championship. Jerry Wong bagged 3,025,000 overnight as he fires for the bracelet from the position of chip leader, and he only has Michael Moncek (2,760,000) and Carlos Chadha (1,590,000) to beat in an all-American showdown.

 

That’s because Elior Sion (4^th for $97,960) and Talal Shakerchi (5^th for $73,495) fell just short in their bids for gold on an entertaining and lengthy penultimate day of action. Of the trio remaining, Moncek already has a bracelet in 2023’s WSOP this summer, so can he add a second? We’ll find out in an extra day added to the schedule tomorrow.

Seif Chases Leads in $2,000 NLHE Event #37

 

Mark Seif (711,000) is chasing down the lead held by Lee Piniatoglou in Event #37, the $2,000-entry No Limit Hold’em event. The tournament, which had 1,962 runners, played down to 321 survivors overnight, with Joshua Reichard (666,000) and Kai Zheng (567,000) also making the upper limits of the leaderboard.

 

Other big names to make the cut included WSOP bracelet winners Carlos Chang (348,000), Rafael Reis (330,000) and Ran Koller (296,000) all in the top 55 players who are chasing a top prize of $524,777.

Adam Friedman Flying High in Limit 2-7 Championship

 

Mixed game specialist Adam Friedman (279,000) is a man to be feared in any discipline of poker, and after Day 1 of the Limit 207 Championship, Friedman only sits behind chip leader Michael Wagner (284,000) at the top of a leaderboard with 45 survivors from 106 entries on it.

 

Elsewhere in the counts, Daniel Negreanu came in 15^th on 177,000 chips, with Allen ‘Chainsaw’ Kessler (154,000) surviving to Day 2 in the top third of the chipcounts too.
