Jason Koon came a long way from his humble West Virgina roots to sit side by side with some of the biggest poker players in the world. Koon’s past five years saw him steadily grow in the game but in just over a month Koon won $2.3 million, boosted by his recent win at PokerStars Championship Bahamas $100,000 Super High Roller.

Koon’s windfall came against some of the toughest and most successful high stakes players in the world – Bryn Kenney, Connor Drinnan, Byron Kaverman and Daniel Colman.

“The final table was absolutely stacked, as expected in that tournament,” Koon said. “None of those guys are going to give anything away. We have all been there enough to know that it’s really about just showing up and playing the best poker you can play; hopefully the rest works out.”

Koon accumulated $8.1 million in career earnings through 19 cashes of six-figures or more without winning a WSOP or WPT title. But Koon doesn’t measure his personal goals by titles or dollars.

“My goals are simple; continually grow as human being and do my best to better the lives of those I care about, as well as my own,” he said.

Koon returned to Vancouver following the Bahamas, where he has lived the past couple of years. He intends to continue improving his game playing online and continually testing himself over the year. “I’ll be dropping down to Vegas for all of High Rollers at ARIA.”

“It’s important to have things that are more important to your overall happiness than poker,” Koon said. “Having love and balance in your life helps you stay focused on the bigger picture when things aren’t going so well on the poker front.”
