Daniel Negreanu Suffers Epic Bad Beat in WPT World Championship

Daniel Negreanu has been on the wrong end of plenty of bad beats throughout his poker career, and the one he was hit with on Sunday in the WPT World Championship is right up there with the worst of them.

Playing for a $4,136,000 first-place prize with just 17 players remaining from the field of 2,930 entries, Negreanu got involved with Lucas Foster. According to the WPT Live Updates team, Negreanu opened with a raise on the button to 800,000 with the blinds at 200,000/400,000 with a 400,000 big blind ante. Foster was in the big blind and three-bet to 2,300,000. Negreanu called.

Foster and Negreanu took a flop of ten-four-two with two clubs. Foster was first to act and bet 2,500,000. Negreanu made the call before the dealer added another ten to pair the board on the turn. Foster got a count of Negreanu's stack and then moved all in. Negreanu quickly call the call with pocket twos for a flopped set that turned into a full house. Foster had an overpair with pocket kings. With the money in the middle, Negreanu was eyeing a pivotal double up as a 9-to-1 favorite.

The poker gods had other plans, though. The dealer burned and dealt a king on the river to give Foster a better full house and the winning hand. Negreanu shot up from his chair and yelled that he felt it in his bones.

Although Negreanu did earn a $176,200 payday from his 17th-place finish in the WPT World Championship at Wynn Las Vegas, the feeling of what could have been must sting. After busting, Negreanu tweeted, "Going to take a couple days to unwind after a grueling run, then it’s back on the horse for the PGT Championship Wednesday."

Negreanu did add 176 PGT leaderboard points with his result in the WPT World Championship and improved his standing on the PGT leaderboard to 18th place for the time being. Should Negreanu remain inside the top 21 of the PGT leaderboard through Tuesday, December 20, then he'll qualify for the season-ending PGT Championship event at the PokerGO Studio in Las Vegas.

The season-ending PGT Championship is a 21-player freeroll for the top 21 players on the PGT leaderboard, and they'll all be playing for a $500,000 winner-take-all prize. The two-day PGT Championship will be live streamed on PokerGO across both days.
