Monday morning. Your alarm goes off for the first time in two days, you head back to the office and then spend the first few hours of the workday planning out how you’ll survive until closing time on Friday. Luckily, Poker Central and Death Wish Coffee have you covered. The world’s strongest coffee gives you a “Morning Perk,” recapping the weekend sports action on Monday and then the best from across the internet on Friday.

Time flies when you are having fun and we’ve been having so much fun that it is already May. When this happened, we have no idea but that means that the poker world is closer to the start of the World Series of Poker, the NBA and NHL playoffs are closer to crowning a champion and that the dog days of summer are right around the corner. Until then, what caught our eye during this weekend’s sports action?

The NFL Draft is now a three-day spectacle and while the backend of the draft is far from “must-watch” television like Thursday night’s opening round, the last pick of the draft always makes headlines. This year, the Denver Broncos had the right to pick Mr. Irrelevant and they didn’t pick some random wide out or defensive back. Instead, they ended the 7th round by selecting Ole Miss quarterback and nephew of Hall of Famer Jim Kelly, Chad Kelly, who could arguably compete for the Broncos backup job this preseason.

Earlier this year, many thought the English Premier League title was all but locked up. Chelsea had a sizable lead on the chase pack but over the last few months, Tottenham has kept pace with the English giants. They did so again this weekend, beating arch rival Arsenal 2-0, thanks to goals from Dele Alli and Harry Kane, to stay within touching distance of Chelsea, who is four points clear at the top with four games to go in the EPL season.

This time of year, it is usually hockey players getting praised for their late-season toughness but Isaiah Thomas nearly single-handedly proved basketball players are tough too. The Boston Celtics star got elbowed in the mouth early in the opening game of their second-round series against the Washington Wizards, lost his tooth and then picked it up off the floor before scoring 33 points to lead the Celtics to a Game 1 victory. Boston and Thomas may have stumbled early in Round 1 but they are now unbeaten in their last five and look to be one of the hottest teams in the league.

The same complaints that non-fans have of soccer, “It’s boring.”, “They don’t score enough.”, can be said of baseball as well but don’t tell that to the Washington Nationals. They exploded yesterday, thanks to a three-homerun performance by Anthony Rendon, to put 23 on the New York Mets. That is a lot of runs and a lot of fantasy points if you own Rendon.

While Boston was claiming a 1-0 lead in their series, the final match-up of the opening round was playing out in Los Angeles. The Clippers failed to win a decisive Game 7 on their homecourt and that means that the Utah Jazz get the honor of losing to the Golden State Warriors in the next round and that we’ve seen the last of Paul Pierce. The Truth played the final game of his storied NBA career Sunday and he will be a surefire Hall of Famer when he becomes eligible in 2022.

“Morning Perk” Bonus Perk: At the start of the weekend I didn’t know Manny Ramirez was still playing baseball but I am so happy to know that Manny is okay, still hitting home runs and clearly a commentator favorite in Taiwan.
