Coming into the penultimate day of the WPT Montreal Main Event, two players dominated the headlines. One of those players was chip leader Eric Afriat, who was the lone WPT Champions Club member remaining from the 606-player WPT Montreal field. The other was reigning GPI Player of the Year and High Roller extraordinaire David Peters, who began the day with an average stack.

Through a Day 4 session that saw the WPT Montreal field go from 16 players to a final table of six, both Afriat and Peters went up, then down, then up again, but regardless of how they got there, both had punched tickets to Thursday’s PokerGO streamed final table.

Afriat’s roller coaster ride left him near the bottom of the Day 4 leader board, with just a 17-big blind stack, but while he will begin the final table as one of the short stacks, Afriat’s lone WPT win came in the biggest event in tour history.

That means the Canadian has plenty of experience to draw from and the same can be said about David Peters. The 2016 GPI Player of the Year has seven-figure scores from the world’s biggest events and over $18 million in career tournament earnings. The Ohio native is making his first official WPT since the Season XI WPT World Championship.

Outside of those two big names, the WPT Montreal final table boasts a few other interesting names and story lines that will play out on PokerGO later today.

Chip leader Patrick Quinn was born in Canada and raised in Ireland, where he has been a restaurateur for the past 20 years. California’s Brendan Baksh notched his first WPT cash when the WPT Montreal bubble burst and two days later, is at his first WPT final table, while Maxime Heroux, who is from Montreal, has gone three-for-three and cashed every Canadian WPT event held this year.

Derek Wolters, who is near Afriat at the bottom of the counts, is arguably the most experienced player at the final table outside of Afriat and Peters. Wolters has over $625,000 in career tournament earnings and is making his second-career WPT final table.

Before any of the final six look ahead to that star-studded event though, they’ll first need to outlast a tough WPT Montreal final table.
