Event #73 – $10,000 World Series of Poker Main Event

The poker world will likely never know why this trend started but over the last few years, more and more dogs have made their way to the World Series of Poker. The last time I checked, the WSOP was for people, which means leave the dogs at home! In other news…

Plenty of past Main Event champions advanced to their respective Day 2 sessions but yesterday, Ryan Riess was unable to punch his ticket to Day 3. The 2013 champ won his first major tournament title since his WSOP triumph this past spring, winning the $10,000 buy-in WPT Seminole Hard Rock Finale and then continued that run with a semi-final finish in the $10,000 Heads Up Championship earlier this summer. The Beast will have to wait another year to make another run at a WSOP bracelet.

While Ryan Riess’ summer concluded in the Main Event, Johnny Chan’s is still alive. The back-to-back champ in 1987 and 1988 is still in the Main Event with a healthy stack heading into Day 3.  The ten-time bracelet winner is the only player in the field with a chance at a third-career Main Event victory, although Chan, pictured top, and the rest of the field have a long way to go before thoughts of the winner’s circle can cross their minds.

The Main Event is a marathon and sometimes, during a marathon, you need a little break. While Nick Petrangelo may have relaxed and gotten a massage, while looking like he was as close to taking a nap as possible without actually taking a nap, during the end of yesterday’s Day 2C flight, the former bracelet winner will likely not be doing much relaxing today. He comes back with a healthy pile for Day 3, one that he hopes can lead him to third-straight WSOP Main Event cash.
