Since winning the second $50,000 prelim of the Poker Masters series, Steffen Sontheimer has had a stranglehold on the top spot of the Poker Masters Championship Standings. That stranglehold got even tighter after picking up another cash in Event #4 and his grip intensified through the first two days of the $100,000 Championship.

As Sontheimer bagged a top-five stack through Day 1 of the $100,000 Championship, former Purple Jacket contenders were exposed as pretenders. Four players from the Championship Standings top-five busted before the start of Day 2 and a majority of the other contenders fell on the way to the final table.

Fedor Holz was one of the only Purple Jacket contenders to keep himself in contention through the first two days of the $100,000 Championship. His Purple Jacket stock increased after he bagged the final table chip lead, giving himself a decent shot to halt Sontheimer’s Purple Jacket quest on Wednesday.

That makes it almost fitting that Sontheimer’s countryman and closest competitor’s 3rd place elimination secured the Purple Jacket. Sontheimer had plenty of ways to win heading into the $100,000 Championship final table, and while he would have donned the jacket earlier had Holz busted before the podium, where he finishes is now a formality.

A formality for the Poker Masters Purple Jacket, but Sontheimer likely won’t take his heads up battle with Christian Christner. The last time these two met heads up, in an ARIA $100K Super High Roller, Christner came out victorious, meaning Sontheimer’s likely looking for a bit of revenge and to end his already spectacular Poker Masters series with an exclamation point.

While the Poker Masters Purple Jacket has already been locked up, $1.5 million is still up for grabs in the $100,000 Championship and heads up play between Steffen Sontheimer and Christian Christner is now live on PokerGO.
